Food insecurity refers to having limited or uncertain access to food.
One is considered housing insecure if they do not consistently have the means to pay for housing expenses such as rent or utilities. This term also applies to those who are living in overcrowded spaces or do not have stable housing.
PRISM operates a food shelf, which means we directly work with those in need to distribute food and other resources. A food bank is larger and usually doesn’t work with those seeking resources directly, but help provide and distribute food to shelves
Food insecurity and poverty looks differently in the suburbs. It is often hidden. It could be your neighbor down the street, or a parent from your kids soccer team. Many families are living paycheck to paycheck, and are one crisis from financial insecurity.
