Golden Valley’s PRISM Hosts April 5 ‘Fill the Food Shelf’ Event

PRISM, a nonprofit with a food shelf in Golden Valley, is still working this week to reach its March donation goal.

The campaign hopes to raise 300,000 pounds of food or funds of the same amount for people in need. As of Tuesday morning, PRISM had reached 40 percent of that goal.

For one last push, PRISM is hosting a “Fill the Food Shelf” event on Friday, April 5, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. PRISM asks that you bring donations to their location on 1220 Zane Ave. N. Visitors will get to weigh their donations and get a tour of the food shelf.

PRISM Advancement Director Alisha Weis said this is the six-week campaign’s last week.

“We are seeing, though, anywhere from 250-350 new families reaching out for support from PRISM every single month. So, the need is definitely still there and continues to rise,” Weis said.

A volunteer stocks the shelves at PRISM’s food pantry.

The nonprofit typically distributes around 140,000 pounds of food each month. These donations help it go far.

Weis said monetary donations are preferred, but anything helps. It’s easier for PRISM to stretch those dollars.

In terms of physical donations, flour, sugar, oil, canned fruit and canned proteins are what PRISM needs most.

The more money PRISM raises, the more eligible it becomes for bonus dollars.
